Supported Projects

Since 2013, the Places to Grow Implementation Fund has supported various projects that have helped to promote growth management in the Greater Golden Horseshoe and Northern Ontario.

Places to Grow Implementation Fund Projects for 2017-18

Four projects were supported in 2017-18:

  • Achieving Urban Growth Centre Activity Integration through Walking: The project explored how to improve walkability in Urban Growth Centres in the Greater Golden Horseshoe, supporting the Growth Plan's objectives to reduce land consumption and achieve density goals. Three workshops, were held to share research findings amongst Ontario planners and other practitioners (University of Waterloo).

  • Growth and Resiliency in Tower in the Park Sites Across the Greater Golden Horseshoe: This project studied infill and intensification of aging tower sites as a tool to achieve the Growth Plan's goals (Centre for Urban Growth and Renewal).

  • Growing in the Greater Golden Horseshoe II: Through this project, the proponent increased awareness and understanding of growth planning among teachers and students in the Greater Golden Horseshoe, focusing on grades 7 to 12 geography and grade 10 to 11 science. Building on the lesson plans and teacher's guide developed through the 2016-17 Places to Grow Implementation Fund project Growing in the Greater Golden Horseshoe, the organization held additional workshops for teachers and students across the region to help ensure that youths and teachers are informed, engaged, and active in the growth planning of their communities (EcoSpark).

  • Transit-Supportive Planning Municipal Toolbox: Resources were developed through this project to increase knowledge and understanding among municipalities of tools for growth planning around rapid transit projects in the Greater Golden Horseshoe. Building on the successful 2016-17 Places to Grow Implementation Fund report, Getting on Board, this project develops knowledge on municipal land use planning tools that can be used to promote complete communities and transit-supportive development (Pembina).
